Digitalizing Everything? Reflections from the Seminar on Artificial Intelligence and Ethics at the University of Ljubljana

On Friday, April 26, 2024, colleagues Nadia Molek and Lina Čop participated in a workshop on the use of the DEDA tool as an aid for ethical decision-making in artificial intelligence. The event took place at the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology (Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana).

Through the DEDA method (Data Ethics Decision Aid), we explored, using role-playing, how to develop AI systems with an ethical approach. The tool helps experts, project managers, and policymakers identify ethical dilemmas in data management.

Key takeaway: Digitalization is not always the answer!

The most provocative debate revolved around the question:

"Do we really need to digitalize EVERY process?"

AI can optimize, but automation is not always meaningful.

The essence lies in balancing efficiency and humanity – preserving space for intuition, ethics, and analog solutions.

When is AI helpful, when is it risky?

✅ AI as an ally:

Saves time (e.g., automation of routine tasks)

Fosters creativity (e.g., tools for co-creation)

Reduces errors (e.g., AI-assisted medical diagnostics)

⚠ AI as a challenge:

When implemented without understanding users’ real needs

When analyzing sensitive data without ethical guidelines (e.g., social profiles, medical records)

Principles of responsible AI design:

🔹 Ask "why?" before "how?" – purpose before technology

🔹 Put people at the center – not technological capabilities

🔹 Prevent bias – AI can reinforce social inequalities

Conclusion:

Technology should serve people, not the other way around.

Thanks for the inspiration that brought together philosophy, anthropology, and innovation!
